Dr. Hobart Harmon Joins VASS
Dr. Hobart Harmon is Co-Director of the Rural Math Excel Partnership (RMEP) grant. Dr. Harmon earned Ph.D. and Master’s degrees from The Pennsylvania State University. He also holds a MS degree from The Ohio State University, a BS degree from West Virginia University and an Associate degree from Potomac State College of West Virginia University.
In joining VASS, Dr. Harmon brings extensive experience as an independent consultant in educational planning, research and evaluation. He is one of the nation’s leading experts on public education in rural America. Dr. Harmon held an adjunct Associate Professor of Education (Educational Leadership) appointment in the Department of Education Policy Studies at Penn State University, where he affiliated with the Center on Rural Education and Communities. For almost seven years, Dr. Harmon was a Senior Research and Development Specialist at AEL, Inc., which operated the USED-funded Appalachian Educational Laboratory. Other AEL positions included Virginia Resident Director, senior manager of the National Rural Education Specialty, director of The Rural Center at AEL, and associate director and acting director of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Rural Education and Small Schools. Dr. Harmon also served three years as director of parent and community engagement for improving student achievement in math, science and technology in the 6-state, $10 million Appalachian Rural Systemic Initiative (ARSI) funded by the National Science Foundation.
Additional work experience includes positions within the West Virginia Department of Education, including executive assistant to the state superintendent. In 2009, Dr. Harmon received the National Rural Education Association’s Stanley A. Brzezinski Memorial Rural Education Research Award. He has authored numerous publications pertaining to rural education in the United States.
