Sandy Wilborn is RMEP Math Specialist

Sandy Wilborn, a native of Halifax County, Virginia, began her pursuit of math studies by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Elon University and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics Education from Nova Southeastern University. After working as a personal banker for 9 years, she left the business world to bring her passion for math to middle school students. During her 6-year tenure as a secondary math teacher, Sandy taught Pre-Algebra and Algebra I at Halifax County Middle School before transferring to the high school to teach Algebra II and Pre-Calculus.

Because of her reputation as an effective teacher and passionate math leader, Sandy was asked by Virginia Advanced Study Strategies, Inc. (VASS), a statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve STEM education and prepare today’s students for the workforce of tomorrow, to complete training in Dallas, Texas to become a certified trainer of the National Math and Science Initiative’s (NMSI) math program. While teaching, Sandy used this training to hone her own teaching strategies and to present multiple sessions of math training (sponsored by VASS) to teachers all over the state in an effort to help them improve pedagogy and content knowledge and better help students learn and apply math skills.

In 2013, Sandy accepted the position of Math Specialist with VASS and is currently leading the math initiatives paid for through a US Department of Education Investing In Innovation (i3) grant. She currently resides in Alton, Virginia with her husband Chris and two daughters, Sydney and Lacey.
