Supporting Student Success in Math for College and STEM Careers
Training and ongoing support provided by Virginia Advanced Study Strategies (VASS)
VASS is offering a one-day training to middle and high school math teachers in Southcentral and Southwest Virginia. This training is based on research from a U.S. Department of Education Investing in Innovation project conducted by VASS in six rural Virginia school divisions. Participants will explore the connection between the workplace and the math classroom in teaching math in more applied ways. Specifically, participants will complete group activities to learn about the math competencies used in high-demand, high-skill STEM occupations, solve real math problems faced by technicians in the workplace (with tools used on the job), create real-world activities to be used in their classrooms, and begin planning ways to engage parents and community members to ensure student success in math as preparation for college and careers. In addition to the one-day training, participants will be provided ongoing support during the 2016-2017 school year through quarterly interactive webinars with the VASS math specialist and staff.
